Streatham Hill

Following a stunning house renovation project this open, west-facing garden needed an overhaul.

Echoing the new interior roofline and reflecting the architect-designed deck, the new design has two terraces on either side of a lawn angled to face the morning and afternoon sun.

Bespoke metal planters filled with scented Mediterranean planting edge the deck and frame the main seating area. A large sawn sandstone terrace provides space for entertaining, cooking and family life. Pleached Magnolia grandiflora screen neighbouring properties and create an attractive long view from the hallway.

A path wraps around the lawn and leads to the second terrace and beyond, screened by a yew hedge, is a children’s play area, storage and utility space.

Horizontal batten trellis creates depth and makes the garden feel wider. Pleached Ceanothus will in time screen neighbouring houses to the rear. The planting mixes evergreen shrubs for structure and all year round interest with scented flowering shrubs and perennials in pinks, purples and whites for seasonal colour and flourish. An Amelanchier lamarckii will balance the neighbouring trees, provide blossom, leaf colour and autumn drama.

‘Sarah created a garden for us that is both practical and stylish.

Her expertise meant that the whole project, from design to completion, was managed brilliantly and we now have a beautiful garden that we love spending time in.’
